The South Ward Neighbourhood Management Team and NS Housing (www.nshousing.org.uk) have teamed up to improve an area of derelict communal gardens on the Bournville estate. 70 properties back on to the large garden space, which used to have neglected sheds and garages on it. The space is not used by residents because it is a major cut through for people on the estate and residents have no privacy or security and the gardens are left unused and derelict.
The Neighbourhood Management Team conducted a series of consultation events with residents which began in spring 2009. Residents were invited to come and share their ideas for the garden and tell us what they would like to see. Landscape designers White Design (www.white-design.co.uk) were employed help conduct the consultation events and to devise a plan for the garden which responded to comments from residents.
The garden area will consist of 6 small gardens, catering for each of the blocks, and one larger communal area which will link the spaces together. Features that have been included in the communal garden are fruit trees, natural play features such as logs and sleepers, picnic benches
Planning permission was granted in May and tenders went out. The winning contractor was Boley and Skuse, who started work on 12th July. Work shall be completed end Autumn 2010.
